Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) – Worldwide Cathodic Protection Program

About this position

  • Approximately 8 months in duration with the possibility of follow-on work
  • Travel to US mainland locations for a 4-6 week duration
  • Base salary plus per diem and travel expenses
  • DoD projects requiring background check to gain access to military installations.

Position Overview:

The Site Safety and Health Officer (SSHO) will lead daily safety management activities, enforce and improve safety culture, policies, and procedures, and ensure compliance across multiple construction sites across the United States. This role requires a hands-on safety professional who can balance a “make it happen” mindset and strong customer focus with unwavering commitment to safety compliance. The SSHO puts employees and client personnel and assets first by anticipating and promptly addressing their safety needs while ensuring all activities meet regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct thorough construction site safety inspections to identify hazards and enforce safety standards.
  • Prepare and conduct pre-qualification and pre-construction safety reviews to ensure safety is proactively planned and integrated into each site.
  • Review and approve subcontractor activity hazard analyses (AHAs).
  • Distribute, track, and maintain critical safety equipment to ensure readiness and compliance.
  • Travel regularly to construction sites across the United States to conduct inspections, training, and safety meetings. Travel is expected to be 75-90%.
  • Monitor and follow up on safety compliance tasks assigned to Project Managers and Quality Control Managers to ensure timely completion.
  • Prioritize and address urgent safety issues promptly through phone, email, and preferably in-person interactions.
  • Foster a customer-focused approach by putting clients and employees first, proactively ensuring they have the safety resources and support needed at all times.
  • Balance the “make it happen” attitude with strict adherence to all safety compliance requirements and regulations.
  • Apply EM 385-1-1 and 29 CFR 1926 standards with practical familiarity to provide accurate, reliable guidance to Project Managers and Quality Control Managers without improvisation or guesswork.
  • Demonstrate maturity and judgment to advise holding off on activities when needed, to research and develop a compliant plan that ensures job completion with safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Promote a positive safety culture by fostering open communication and proactive problem-solving.
  • Maintain familiarity in the following major areas: excavation, scaffolding, fall protection, hazardous energy, confined spaces, health hazard recognition, evaluation and control of chemical, physical, and biological agents, personal protective equipment and clothing to include selection, use, and maintenance.
  • Support development of confined space entry plan(s), critical lift plans, to include weight handling equipment certificate of compliance, severe storm plan(s), and air operations obstruction plan(s).
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of EM385, OSHA, NFPA regulations, and industry best practices to ensure compliance and continuous improvement.
  • Provide prompt notifications of accidents or near misses, followed accurate accident reports as a result of a thorough accident investigation.

Qualifications:

  • EM 385-1-1 40-hour Certification.
  • Safety certifications preferred: OSHA 30, OSHA 500, OSHA 510, Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST), Associate Safety Professional (ASP) certifications are a plus.
  • Current DoD CAC a plus.
  • Proven experience in construction safety management.
  • Strong knowledge of OSHA 1926 and NFPA 70E standards and construction safety practices.
  • Experience managing safety personnel and working within a safety management system.
  • Proficiency with spreadsheet and project management tools, with a strong preference for Smartsheet experience.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to travel frequently throughout the United States.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively.
  • Hands-on approach with a focus on onsite engagement and problem resolution.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance a “make it happen” attitude with uncompromising safety compliance and sound judgment.
  • Strong customer service focus.
